Introducing GOGIRL International
Happy International Women's Day, from GOGIRL International.
I recently created a LinkedIn page for GOGIRL International, and I want to use this post to share about the time we spent in Nigeria this past winter. GOGIRL, short for Global Outreach to Girls In Rural Lands, is a nonprofit built to empower the rural girl.
This past December, the GOGIRL team made its first overseas trip since the pandemic began, hosting three events in the villages of Igbere and Owerri. We led interactive sessions with girls ages four to nineteen on empowerment, feminine health, arts, and sports, alongside soccer scrimmages, songs, and games like Red Light Green Light and Musical Chairs. Each girl received a GOGIRL T-shirt and a small pouch with a treat, feminine products, a toothbrush, and soap.
Sessions scheduled for two hours often stretched into half a day, because the girls were so eager to share what they had learned, and turnout doubled some days beyond what we expected. One popular affirmation we shared together was, “I am a girl and I am powerful.” The point of GOGIRL is simple: to uplift girls, and to encourage girls to encourage each other.
