A Youth Law Fair with My Sister

Touring the D.C. court system with my sister.

This weekend I explored the D.C. court system with my younger sister at the 25th Annual Melvin R. Wright Youth Law Fair, an event that invites students from across the DMV to learn about legal issues and the D.C. Superior Court System.

At the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse, we walked through exhibits and met a range of attorneys and judges, including the fair's namesake, the Honorable Melvin R. Wright, Associate Judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

I have used my own experience to mentor my sister in public speaking, and I got to watch her put that practice to work during the Mock Trial portion of the day. She was recognized for her speaking skills and her commanding presence before the court, and I could not have been prouder. It was empowering, too, to see so many women of color among the attorneys and judges, including the Honorable Judge Ebony M. Scott.
