A Black History Month Reflection
On a grandmother's prophecy, fulfilled.
In celebration of Black History Month, I spent February highlighting some of my proudest accomplishments from the year before. Maya Angelou once said, “Nothing will work unless you do.”
My passion for understanding global cultures led me to complete a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Studies, with a concentration in Korean and a minor in Social Entrepreneurship, at the University of Virginia's Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. I carried an advanced course load and graduated a year early.
In doing so, I fulfilled a prophecy my grandmother made when I was a child, that she would live to see me graduate from college, a dream that had eluded her after losing everything in a war torn nation. She always told me that a good education could never be taken away from me. She passed away one month after my graduation.
